WHAT MEANS THE NAME 'walden'?
The Dutch associate the name Walden with Henry Thoreau and specially with the Utopian Socialism as it was propagated by the Dutch writer Frederik van Eeden in the 'Walden' Commune. There is yet another explanation. The name 'Walden' first of all refers to Herwath Walden. Walden is a pseudonym for Georg Lewin, son of a Jewish physician. Walden was taught piano by pianist Georg Ansorge, a pupil from the renowned composer Frans Liszt. Although Walden composed music himself, his star rose as the promoter of music and later also of theatre performances. Walden was a writer and artcollector. He was the founder of the group 'Der Sturm' (the storm) to which many European artists belonged who today are known as classic modernists. To give a few examples: Chagall, Max Ernst, Jacoba van Heemskerk, Campendonck, Zadkine and Jawlensky. On March 1912 the first exhibition of 'Der Sturm' was opened. Later on 'Der Sturm' became discredited as a bunch of Jews and communists. In 1933 Walden migrated to the Soviet Union where he died in prison in 1941.
